Yesterday's low-pressure area over South Rajasthan and North Gujarat moved to Southwest Rajasthan and adjoining Kutch and South Pakistan. It is likely to remain over the same region and weaken into a trough in the next 24 hours. Finally, it will get diffused over that region and merge with the monsoon trough.

The low pressure broke the jinx of dry weather and lashed most parts of Gujarat with moderate to heavy rainfall. Kandla Port was the rainiest, with 157 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. Rainfall amounts between 50 mm and 100 mm were recorded at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Mahuva, Porbandar, Okha, Rajkot, Naliya and Bhuj. The deep interiors and extreme northern parts of the state also got light to moderate showers.

While the heavy rains will vacate most parts of South Coastal Gujarat and the interiors of Central and North Gujarat, scattered heavy showers will continue today as well over Saurashtra and Kutch, more prominently over the border areas of Kutch. Isolated weather activity will continue over the state for the next 2-3 days.

Both the sub-divisions, Gujarat and Saurashtra & Kutch, were battling with large seasonal rainfall deficits. The ongoing wet spell will substantially shrink the deficit margin, more so for the needy pocket of Saurashtra. The time of monsoon withdrawal is coming closer for the state. The retreat starts from the extreme border area of Kutch from 20 September, and by the end of the month, the withdrawal gets complete from most parts of the state, outside South Coastal Gujarat. The monsoon exits the state, in toto, by 05 October. The state observes a long dry period between October and April.
