New year began on a chilly note, with Delhi-NCR continue to be in the grip of extreme winter chill. Severe cold wave sweeps the national capital as minimum temperature once again dropped to 2.4 degree Celsius, which was five notches below the normal average.
However, there was much relief during the day time, as maximum temperatures increased significantly to 14.7 degree Celsius on Tuesday from record low 9.4 degree Celsius on Monday. But day maximums were still well below the mean temperatures by five degrees and thus, cold day conditions persisted.
Slowly and steadily is moving towards some relief as Delhi rains are likely to make an appearance. According to weathermen, a fresh and active Western Disturbance has started affecting Jammu and Kashmir, which has also induced a cyclonic circulation over Northeast Rajasthan. With this, a trough is also likely to extend from this system across the northwestern plains.
We can expect some isolated light rains over Delhi-NCR on January 2. With this, wind pattern has changed and has restricted the flow of chilly northwesterly winds. These winds are now blowing from the easterly direction, which is comparatively warm and humid in nature. With this, minimum temperatures are likely to rise across the national capital along with nearby areas of Noida, Gurugram and Faridabad. As a result, cold wave would abate and we do not expect to make a come back anytime soon as night temperatures would remain near normal.
Meanwhile, cold day conditions would continue for another 24 hours and is expected to abate thereafter. Days would see bright sunshine, bringing huge relief for the capital which has been bearing the brunt of extreme cold weather for the last 18 consecutive days.
Shallow to moderate fog is likely to persist during the morning hours but dense fog is ruled out for the next 2-3 days.
