Rain in Maharashtra increases, Monsoon inches closer

Monsoon rains have reduced significantly over the entire state of Maharashtra during the last many days, barring few areas. In the last 24 hours, only Konkan & Goa region continued to witness good Monsoon rains. Also, the adjoining areas of Madhya Maharashtra observed light rainfall activities.

Whereas, Marathwada and Vidarbha continued to reel under dry weather conditions.

In a span of last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Bhira 60 mm, Mahabaleshwar 40.3 mm, Alibag 24.3 mm, Harnai 19.6 mm, Ratnagiri 13.8 mm, Mumbai 12.8 mm, Dahanu 9.5 mm, Nashik 3.1 mm, Kolhapur 4.1 mm, Sangli 2 mm and Pune 1 mm.

Moreover, we do not foresee any significant weather systems approaching the state, which may lead to further reduction in the rainfall. Places such as Pune, Sangli, Satara, Nashik and Kolhapur may continue to witness light Monsoon rains for the next few days.

In fact, most parts of Konkan & Goa region would see light to moderate rains during the next 24 hours but rains will reduce, thereafter.

Meanwhile, cities of Marathwada and Vidarbha such as Akola, Nagpur, Parbhani, Aurangabad, Wardha and Nanded are expected to remain almost dry.

These weather conditions can be attributed to a weakening of the offshore trough which is seen moving away from the state. Secondly, we do not foresee any weather systems developing across Maharashtra.

Due to this, there are no chances of good Monsoon rains to occur within few days over Maharashtra and adjoining areas. The intensity of rainfall activities over Konkan & Goa may reduce significantly in the next two to three days but few spells of light to moderate rains at few places cannot be ruled out.

Mumbai may continue to receive light rains and thundershowers along with one or two short spells of moderate showers. The weather conditions across Maharashtra will continue to remain uncomfortable for the residents and the humidity is also likely to persist. The temperatures are expected to rise and reach up to mid 30s.

As on July 31, Marathwada and Vidarbha are both rain deficient regions by 20% and 17%, respectively. Konkan & Goa and Madhya Maharashtra are rain surplus by 7% and 22%, respectively.
