After reeling under dry weather conditions for long, rains have finally returned to South India. During the last 24 to 48 hours, parts of Telangana including Hyderabad have observed rain and thundershowers. Meanwhile, Karnataka, Interior Tamil Nadu and parts of Kerala received scattered showers.

According to the rainfall data available with Skymet, Gulbarga received 20 mm of rain, Mangaluru 23 mm, Hyderabad 9 mm, Mysore 8 mm, Palakkad 25 mm of rain in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday.

These rains were a result of the Cyclonic Circulation over Coastal Karnataka and a feeble Trough which has been extending from the Comorin area to Coastal Karnataka across Interior Tamil Nadu.

As the systems are expected to persist for some more time, isolated light rain may continue in Interior Tamil Nadu, parts of Karnataka and Kerala for the next few days.

The rainfall activities are likely to increase from the evening of March 5 as a new Trough is expected to form from Chhattisgarh to South Interior Karnataka. The humid winds from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea would also feed moisture, thus making the conditions favourable for rain.

Between March 5 and 7, scattered light to moderate rain is likely in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. The cities of Hyderabad and Chennai may witness a few spells of rain while Bengaluru stands a chance to observe isolated showers.
