During the last 24-48 hours, the weather situation over Maharashtra has taken a U-turn as parts of the state, particularly the coastal region and Madhya Maharashtra have received heavy to extremely heavy rains. To such an extent that many parts ended up recording three digit rains.
Thus, we can say that Monsoon 2017 was vigorous over the coastal parts, while it was active over Madhya Maharashtra. These incessant rains have made the weather extremely pleasant for the residents.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, Harnai recorded a massive 374 mm of rainfall, followed byMahabaleshwar116 mm, Vengurla 113 mm,Ratnagiri95 mm, Dahanu 69 mm and Alibag 51 mm of rains.
The reason behind these downpours over the state of Maharashtra can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation which is persisting over North Coastal Maharashtra and adjoining South Gujarat. In addition to this, an off shore trough is extending from North Konkan to Kerala.
Further, weathermen at Skymet Weather expect these Monsoon rains to continue over the coastal region for another 24 hours. Thereafter, the rain intensity will decrease significantly as the cyclonic circulation as well as the trough will become less marked. However scattered light rains may continue over the region.

Cities such as Harnai,Pune, Ratnagiri, Vengurla and Mahabaleshwar will continue to get good Monsoon rains for another 24 hours. On the other hand,Nashik, Satara, Sangli and Ahmednagar will see light to moderate rains. The capital city, Mumbai may also see heavy rains in the next 24 hours.
As on September 18, the entire state of Maharashtra is rain deficient by 2 percent. Looking at the sub-divisions, Konkan and Goa and Marathwada have witnessed normal rains, while Vidarbha region is the most deficient with 24% and Madhya Maharashtra by 18%.
