A powerful earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale shook Nepal on Saturday near its capital, Kathmandu. The main event was followed by several aftershocks of lesser intensity. Till now, Nepal witnessed 8 aftershocks with intensity of 4 to 7 on the Richter scale.
On Sunday, at around 12.39 pm (IST), a moderate earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale occurred 17km south of Kodari in Nepal. Within an hour, 3 successive earthquakes of measuring 6.7, 5.0 and 4.7 shook Nepal.
These earthquakes of relatively lesser intensity are aftershocks of the main event. Normally, aftershocks last for at least 2 to 3 days but are not this strong. Since the aftershocks are stronger this time, we can expect frequent tremors for at least a week. Moderate intensity aftershocks are unusual.
Aftershocks are equally dangerous because the structures, which are already damaged by main event, are weakened and witness further damage. Rescue operations are also hampered.
Tremors in India
Fresh tremors were felt across North and East India today. The defence ministry, actively helping with the relief and rescue operations in Nepal, has suspended vehicular and air traffic there. All operations will be on hold till 4 pm (IST).
During the Bhuj earthquake in January 2001, tremors were felt at least for next one month. Considering the intensity of shocks felt till now, Skymet predicts light tremors in North and East India for next one week. People in India, near the Nepal border, need not worry much but the danger is still not averted.
