The depression over the Bay of Bengal is located over the West Central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal. It was centred about 300 km east of Visakhapatnam at 8:30 a.m. today. It is likely to strengthen further into a deep depression today itself, sometime in the evening.

The weather system has a partially exposed low-level circulation centre with fairly organised cloud bands. Environmental analysis places the system in an area favourable for development, with low vertical wind shear of 5–10 knots, moderate equatorward flow and warm sea surface temperatures of 29°–30°C. As per the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), the potential for development into a tropical cyclone during the next 24 hours is medium.

The peripheral cloud bands have already encroached on the coastline, and moderate to heavy showers have been recorded over Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Rainfall amounts of 40–60 mm have been recorded at Paradip, Chandbali, Chatrapur, Koraput, Jajpur and Kalingapatnam. Light to moderate showers have reached deep inland over Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The intensity and spread of rainfall will increase substantially today.

The deep depression will move west-northwest and may momentarily become a tropical storm before crossing the coastline between Kalingapatnam and Kakinada. Strong and gusty winds of around 60–80 kmph are likely around the time of crossing.

After crossing the coast, the weather system will spend nearly 4–5 days over land, albeit on a weakening note. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh. The peripherals of dense clouds will breach parts of Vidarbha and North Interior Karnataka as well.

Inclement weather conditions will start softening from 28th September onwards. By then, these conditions will largely vacate the central parts and shift towards Bihar, Jharkhand and East Uttar Pradesh.
