On Monday morning, Gorakhpur and Imphal woke up to very dense fog, as the visibility in these cities dropped to nil and 50 meters, respectively. Meanwhile, Patna and Kolkata continued to observe shallow fog with the visibility of 800 meters.
On December 1, the new entrant to come under the purview of the fog was Jamnagar, where the visibility had dropped to 100 meters. The city generally observes poor visibility conditions on account of sea fog. Although it is dense in nature, it prevails for a very short duration and also fades away very quickly.
Meanwhile, northern plains still await fog. Western Disturbance that affects North India has moved away but minimum temperatures are still settling well above normal. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, we expect drop in minimums during the next 24 hours. Thereafter, lowered temperatures combined with high humidity levels will lead to conducive atmospheric conditions for fog over the northern plains.
Neighbouring countries of India, Nepal and Bangladesh, are also witnessing thick fog. Kathmandu witnessed very dense fog with visibility dropping upto 100 meters, while visibility in Dhaka dropped to 400 meters. At present, fog over most of the places has been shallow and thick, while dense and very dense fog that affects traffic is yet to be seen. As we enter December, fog will now grow in both space and time.
Fog in North India Fog in Delhi and North India is the most common feature of the winter season which leads to massive delay and cancellation of flights and trains. Though Delhi has been missing fog in past few days, it is expected to make an appearance as December approaches.
