Zero visibility in Delhi as fog intensifies, hits flight operations

January 30, 2014 8:38 AM |

A thick and dense blanket of fog is being witnessed in Delhi and other parts of northwest plains which has reduced visibility to nil at many places. The Indira Gandhi International Airport was experiencing nil visibility and at least a dozen flights (eight domestic and four international) have been delayed while one was canceled, till 7:30 am today. Trains originating from Delhi railway stations were also delayed due to fog.

Fog began to intensify in the national capital and adjoining areas late night on Wednesday as moist southeasterly winds slowed down in speed. Fog in Delhi could persist till 10 am or even after that. Increase in wind speed and appearance of sunlight will clear the fog to improve the visibility levels in Delhi and adjoining areas thereafter.

Visibility remained poor at Amritsar, Chandigarh, Agra, Lucknow and Kanpur but it was better in Jaipur and in parts of east India over Varanasi, Allahabad and Patna.

North India is under the influence of a Western Disturbance which is expected to arrive over Jammu & Kashmir from tomorrow onwards. Due to this weather system a cyclonic circulation is emerging over Rajasthan which has led to change in wind conditions in the region.
