Mumbai had another deluge which started yesterday and continued through the night and today morning. Rains are still continuing. Monday blues started on the weekend itself and more so on Sunday with large areas getting water logged. Low lying area were inundated, as the high tide with a wave height of over 12 feet restricted the drain out of water and rather it was a revers flow from the sea, compounding the grim situation further. It impacted the rail, road and air traffic, simultaneously. Nearly 36 incoming flights were diverted.

After having a shortfall of nearly 30% rainfall in June, month of July has been rather generous with frequent spells of 3 digit rainfall in 24 hours. There have been six such occasions, so far, in the month, including a double three digit rainfall of 264mm. The city has accumulated a massive 1400 mm rainfall in July till now, against the monthly normal of 840.6mm. City’s highest total in July was recorded last year with an all time high of 1768mm rainfall, more than double the normal.

There is likely relief, albeit short and sweet. Toady itself, the monsoon fury will relax as the day progresses. This trend will continue, tomorrow as well. However, light to moderate intermittent showers will continue during this period. As a fresh cyclonic circulation comes up over ‘Head Bay’ on 24thJuly, the monsoon surge will pick up, once again along the Konkan Coast. It may not be drowning rains, at that time, still, the intensity and spread will increase between 24th and 26th July 2024.
