Withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon enters its concluding phase

October 25, 2017 12:56 PM | Skymet Weather Team

This year, the withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon was delayed significantly. Southwest Monsoon officially ended on September 30 but the saga of rainy spells continued thereafter as well.

As per the current scenario, Southwest Monsoon has withdrawn from most parts of the country and at present, the withdrawal line can be seen passing from the remaining parts of peninsular India, Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. Further, the conditions seem to be favorable for the further withdrawal of Monsoon from the entire country in the next 24 hours.

In fact, this delay reminded of the weather scenario that prevailed in the country almost seven years back. In the year 2010, the Southwest Monsoon withdrawal was delayed though rains continued until the second week of October over many parts of northwest India including Delhi and NCR. These rains even resulted in hampering the pre-Commonwealth Games preparations to be held in Delhi.

As per Skymet Weather, the reason for this late Southwest Monsoon withdrawal can be attributed to the successive weather systems that developed over the Bay of Bengal and moved towards central and eastern parts of the country.

The latest weather system that contributed in adjourning the withdrawal was a depression that was marked over southwest Bay of Bengal. However, around October 21, this Depression weakened into a Low-Pressure Area.

Due to these Low-Pressure Areas and Depressions, the flow of easterly and southeasterly winds continued up to northwest plains which did not allow the humidity levels to reduce. Southwest Monsoon withdrawal depends on three scenarios; firstly, Prolonged dry spell, secondly, Changes in wind direction from easterly to northwesterly and finally, a Significant decrease in the humidity levels.

At present, as there is no significant weather system prevailing over northwest India, the central and eastern parts of the country, therefore, northwesterly winds have commenced, and the weather is dry since last many days. Due to these dry winds, the humidity levels have also reduced significantly.

Now, due to the prevailing dry and cool winds, the minimums have also witnessed a significant fall. So we expect that in another 24 hours, Southwest Monsoon will withdraw completely from the country paving way for the Northeast Monsoon to set in.
