Usually the withdrawal of Monsoon commences during the first week of September but this time it has been delayed considerably.
The line of withdrawal of Monsoon is currently running through Amritsar, Hisar, Jodhpur, Naliya, Latitude 23°N/ Longitude 65°E and Latitude 23°N/ Longitude 60°E.

Further the conditions are favourable for the further withdrawal of the Monsoon from entire West Rajasthan and Punjab, some more parts of Haryana, Gujarat and North Arabian Sea during the next 24 hours. In the same time frame, it will also retreat from some parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and East Rajasthan.
All the required weather conditions such as continuous dry spell over West Rajasthan for at least five days, change in wind direction from southwesterly to dry northwesterly and significant reduction in humidity have been already met.
According to weathermen, an anti-cylonic circulation has formed over Rajasthan and adjoining areas, which usually marks the withdrawal of Monsoon from Northwest India. With this system, dry northwesterly winds have been blowing over the region. This has led to significant drop in humidity levels, gradually leading to dry weather.
“Formation of one after another cyclonic circulation over Odisha coast that further moved towards Central India and sometimes even up to Southeast Rajasthan and Gujarat, had kept Monsoon active over the region,” said Mahesh Palawat, Vice President- Meteorology, Skymet Weather.
He added, “Persistence of on and off cyclonic circulation over Southwest Rajasthan and South Pakistan, paved way for moist southwesterly winds over many parts of Rajasthan and nearby areas.”
All these above factors had kept the Monsoon surge almost active over Northwest India till the third week of September.
However, now we expect Monsoon to withdraw at fast pace, as we do not foresee development of any significant weather system over Northwest and Central India. In fact, this anti-cyclonic circulation will not let the humid winds reach the region.
