Updated on September 07, 12:40 AM (IST): Southwest Monsoon commences withdrawal from West Rajasthan

July and August are the core Monsoon months in India. Southwest Monsoon begins its four month-long journey in June, which witnesses an outburst of rain. September is the withdrawal month, receiving more of sporadic rain.

Withdrawal of Monsoon is never attempted before September 1 and it commences from extreme West Rajasthan. As Monsoon is conceived as a complex phenomenon, a very cautious approach is taken before announcing its onset or withdrawal. The figure above shows the actual and normal dates for withdrawal of Monsoon from India.

Just as the onset is eagerly awaited, even withdrawal is keenly followed in India. The criteria for withdrawal of Monsoon are:

a. Cessation of rain
b. Reduction in cloud cover
c. Reversal of wind pattern
d. Dip in humidity
e. Rise in temperatures
f. Establishment of anti-cyclone in Rajasthan

These features are generally watched for at least 5 days before announcing the withdrawal of Monsoon from a particular place. Along with the above mentioned features, the Monsoon trough also becomes less marked and remains closer to the foothills of the Himalayas.

We also keep in mind the spatial continuity of the Monsoon line. It’s a continuous and not broken line. According to the latest weather update, Southwest Monsoon has already commenced withdrawal from extreme West Rajasthan. As of today, September 7, the withdrawal line passes through Anupgarh, Nagaur, Jodhpur and Barmer.

Conditions are now favorable for its further withdrawal from some more parts of Rajasthan, some parts of Punjab and Haryana. Withdrawal of Monsoon from a particular place by no means should be construed as total cessation of rainfall. It could rain in Northwest India even after withdrawal of Monsoon, with just a passing Western Disturbance.

Withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon is a slow process. It takes about 15 days, from the date of commencement of withdrawal, for Monsoon to retreat completely from Rajasthan and some parts of Northwest India. Northeast and Peninsular India remain the rainiest pockets throughout September. The daily average rainfall for the country also comes down significantly.
