Pan India average rains during the winter season are recorded to be the lowest. In some seasons, Pan India’s daily normal rainfall activity even exceeds 10 mm. However, during the winter season i.e. the monthly average rains for Pan India in January are 19 mm, which comes to 0.6 mm of rain per day.
In spite of a few rainy spells, winter rains over Pan India have been poor so far. In fact, in January as on January 21, the entire country was rain deficient by 50%. Out of this, on six days rain was even more than normal, followed by nil or zero rain on about seven days.
However, now after a long gap of about one week since January 14, January 21 has become a surplus day for Pan India with 80% rain surplus. In fact, the daily normal average rains were also 1.1 mm.
Major contribution in these surplus rains has been from the hills of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, along with few parts of Uttarakhand and foothills of Punjab. As during this season all other regions of the country hardly receive any rainfall activity.
Moreover, all the states in the plains of North India which were deficient have overcome their deficiency to some extent. In fact, Delhi-NCR region has already exceeded its normal average monthly rains.
Now widespread rain and snowfall activities will continue over the hills and plains of North India and are expected to persist for another 24 hours. Therefore, it is likely that January 22, will be the rainiest day of this winter season with ten times more than normal rains.
Further, from January 23, due to eastward movement of the weather systems, rains will start easing out from the northwestern plains especially from Rajasthan region. However, on and off scattered rains may still continue in parts of Northwest India. Meanwhile, the northern hills will continue with rain and snowfall activities.
