The city of Madurai is located in the deep interiors of the state of Tamil Nadu. This area happens to be a rain Shadow area due to which rainfall activities are not on the higher side. In fact, rains mostly do not visit this area due to which the monthly rainfall for August is 94 mm.

The city of Madurai is surrounded by rivers and mountains however by the virtue of its position it unfortunately is not a rainy pocket. No monsoon systems affect this area and only localised weather conditions causes rainfall in this area.

During the last 24 hours from 8: 30 am on Thursday, such a freak localised weather condition occurred and the city of Madurai recorded 63 mm of rainfall which is also the second highest in the past 10 years.

This was a welcome from the residents of Madurai who had been missing rains as it had not rained for the last 2 weeks.

Rainfall over rain shadow area occurs only when the monsoon trough is north of its original position and the monsoon is be over most parts of the country.

Now, during the next few days rainfall activity will remain light over Madurai and heavy rains are not likely.
