Northeast Monsoon 2019

It is for the first time in the last five years, that Northeast Monsoon arrived on the same day when the four-month Southwest Monsoon completely withdrew from the country. Earlier the Southwest Monsoon kept on giving rains over the northwestern and the central parts of the country.

Since the onset, the Northeast Monsoon has been battering the south peninsular regions of our country. Not only South India, but these Northeast Monsoon rains are also being witnessed in Maharashtra, Telangana and will now even give rains over Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

In the last seven years, particularly in the month of October, it is a very rare chance that evenly distributed rains are seen over all the five sub-divisions which are stipulated under the Northeast Monsoon. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and South Interior Karnataka are the five sub-divisions that are majorly affected by the Northeast Monsoon rains.

In 2016, all five sub-divisions witnessed a deficiency of more than 60% and it was the worst start of the Northeast Monsoon season in 2016. Not only the start, but even the ending was also miserable as it terminated with a deficiency of 65%.

Even in other years, simultaneous good performance of all the five sub-divisions is not a very common thing to be seen. At least two or more than that districts generally see a deficiency of 20% or more in the month of October.

However, 2019 has possibly been an exception so far wherein the five subdivisions have performed well. Coastal Andhra Pradesh is deficient by three percent while Tamil Nadu is surplus by three percent.

Whereas, South Interior Karnataka is surplus by 70%, Rayalaseema by 26% and Kerala by 40%.

In the coming days that is from October 21 to October 23, flooding rains are expected over Karnataka, mainly the interior parts and over Kerala as well. While rains will initially ease out from Tamil Nadu October 24 onward. Districts in coastal Tamil Nadu and those adjoining the border with Kerala got moderate rainfall on Sunday, with the highest recorded at Pamban 64 mm, Coonoor 46 mm and Tondi 41 mm.
