Maharashtra rains

Fairly widespread rains have lashed many parts of Maharashtra and with 241 mm of rainfall, Mahabaleshwar has been observed as the rainiest place in 24 hours from 8.30 am on Sunday. After a long dry spell, many parts of Marathwada too have observed good rains during the same span.

Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rains continued over Konkan and Goa, while rains have significantly increased in parts of Madhya Maharashtra, particularly in Sangli, Kolhapur, Satara, Nashik and Malegaon.

In the last 24 hours, from 8:30 am on Sunday, Mahabaleshwar has recorded 241 mm of rainfall, followed by Ratnagiri 60 mm, Chandrapur 58 mm, Harnai 46 mm, Satara 34 mm and Bramhapuri 31 mm.

However, the intensity of rain has reduced over Mumbai, Dahanu and Thane in the last 24 hours, with Colaba recording only 6.2 mm of rain and Santa Cruz 0.3 mm.

At present, a Cyclonic Circulation is over Chhattisgarh and adjoining Odisha. This system will further move southwestwards, thus leading to enhanced rainfall activities over Vidarbha and Marathwada for the next two to three days. And until July 31, we expect good rains here.

Thereafter, the intensity will go down, but light scattered rains may continue. The weather will remain comfortable. Further, another spell of good rains may commence around August 4 over Vidarbha and Marathwada.

The city of Pune has been receiving good rains for the last many days now. And as on July 28, Pune is rain surplus by 82%. The city has received 827.7 mm of rainfall against the normal of 454.4 mm (June 1 to July 28). We expect a few moderate spells to lash Pune again for the next two days.

The rainfall amounts in Mumbai city until July 28 is also surplus by 26%. There has been 1492 mm of rain in Mumbai against the normal of 1186.2 mm from June 1 to July 28. In fact Mumbai has recorded the highest rainfall in July (1268.4 mm) in five years. The city is short of only 200 mm of rain to crack the overall July record of 1468.5 mm observed in 2014.

Though no heavy rains are likely in Mumbai for the next two days, one or two moderate or intense spells cannot be ruled out.

As of July 28, Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan and Goa are rain surplus by 19% and 24% respectively. While Vidarbha and Marathwada are still deficient. However, with some good showers coming up, we expect the rainfall statistics to improve and water scarcity to ease out.
