The national capital of Delhi is reeling under severe cold for the last many days. As a matter of fact, Delhi saw its second coldest December in history, since records are being kept.
Since, January 2, both day and night temperatures have increased significantly over the city and are above normal. The reason for this can be attributed to the successive Western Disturbances that have altered the wind flow of Delhi. The Northwest cold winds which were instrumental in lowering temperatures have been replaced by warmer and humid Easterly winds.
Meanwhile, pollution didn’t spare Delhi for the last many days. Pollution levels remained in ‘very poor’ to ‘severe’ category in most pockets.
Soon, rain and thundershower activities are expected to commence over Delhi and NCR. Rain and thundershowers are expected from today evening. These on and off rain and thundershower activities will continue until January 8. Isolated pockets may see very heavy rain activities as well as hailstorm.
These rains will also lead to the day temperatures to drop by two to three degrees. Also, Cold Day like conditions are expected as the temperatures may reach around 16 degrees around January 9. The minimums will also start dropping after 24 hours and may reach around 5 degrees around January 9.
So, Winters are here to stay over Delhi and NCR. The day temperatures will once again drop and fall below normal leading to Winter chill.
Just to look into the data, Delhi witnessed Cold Day conditions beginning from the second half of November and prevailing until December end. In fact, Cold Wave has been prevailing over Delhi since the last week of December and prevailed until January 1. The city saw its coldest day of the season with minimums as low as 2.4°C on December 28 as well as January 1. Although the weather has been remaining dry over Delhi after December 14.
