Punjab and Haryana had been experiencing dry weather since many days. In fact, January has been absolutely dry, so far. However, the dry spell ended on Monday as many places in Punjab and Haryana witnessed winter rains.

In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Monday, Ludhiana recorded light rain to the tune of 1 mm, Hisar 0.6 and Amritsar 0.2 mm.

In the same span of time, Patiala, Fatehabad and adjoining areas also recorded traces of rain. These winter rains can be attributed to a Western Disturbance which lies over Western Himalayas and its induced cyclonic circulation over North Rajasthan and adjoining Haryana and Punjab.

As per Skymet Weather, the cyclonic circulation is interacting with the easterly winds and hence, giving rains over scattered places over all these places. However, this weather system is moving at a fast pace. Therefore, it is anticipated that the weather would clear up by tonight.

Due to rapid movement of this system, we do not expect heavy showers over these states but one or two moderate spells cannot be ruled out today. Places such as Amritsar, Ludhiana, Hisar, Patiala, Narnaul, Ambala, Chandigarh, Bhiwani, Faridabad, Fatehabad, Gurgaon, Hisar, Jhajjar, Jind, Kaithal, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Mahendragarh, Mewat, Palwal, Panchkula, Panipat, Rewari, Rohtak, Sonepat and Yamuna Nagar would witness rains.

In wake of the winter rains, the minimum temperatures have increased significantly over Punjab and Haryana. It is expected that the system would move away eastwards and the dry and cold northerly northwesterly winds will return to these states, leading to drop in the minimums once again.

Due to these on and off light rains and cloud cover, the maximum temperatures over the states would witness a substantial drop. However, tomorrow onward the maximums will too start rising because the sky is likely to clear up and the rains will stop.

As per weathermen, there is also a possibility of dense fog over Punjab and Haryana tomorrow. However, it will be short-lived as the northerly winds will gradually pick up the pace.
