December onward the temperatures start going sub-zero over Srinagar, Shimla, Manali, Mussoorie and Nainital. Particularly, Manali and Srinagar see extreme cold as soon as December begins. The series of active Western Disturbance starts affecting Jammu and Kashmir a little earlier than this.

Moreover, temperatures remain sub-zero over these locations in the month of January as well. However, February comes as a change and temperatures start rising over entire North India. Despite this, the first half of February freezes on many occasions. However, sub-zero temperatures become very infrequent in the second half of the month.

Winters are usually the first to arrive in Shimla and Manali and are the last to vacate from here.

Looking at the stats, while Srinagar sees around 15 days of sub-zero temperatures in the month of February, Manali sees around 12 days of below normal temperatures. Shimla, Mussoorie and Nainital on the other hand sees less than 5 days of sub-zero temperatures.

This time, however, Srinagar saw 16 days of sub-zero temperatures, Manali saw twelve days while Shimla saw three days of sub-zero temperatures.

Now, as we have reached the fag end of February, the number of systems will come down considerably and lesser activity will follow over the hills.
