Winters in Delhi becoming colder?

October 21, 2013 2:17 PM|

Nights in Delhi this October have generally been warmer as the average temperature has been recorded at 23.2 degrees Celsius compared to the last five year (2008-2012) average of 18.7 degrees. It has also been higher than the long term average of 19.5 degrees recorded between 1901-2000.

Even if the first half of October was warm, data suggests that nights in the months of November and December have been cooler on an average.

A data comparison of 100 years between 1901-2000 with the last 5 years between 2008 to 2013 reveals some interesting facts about the weather in Delhi during winter.

The average night temperature for the month of November in Delhi in last century (1901-2000) has been 12.8 degrees- a little higher than the five year (2008-2013) average of 12.3 degrees (given in the table below). This clearly shows that November has become a little colder.

December between 1901-2001 had an average minimum temperature of 8.4 while in the last five years it has dropped to 7.5 (given in the table below) making the month even colder.

For January, the average minimum temperature between 1901-2000 was 7.8 degrees but in the last five years between 2008-2013 it dropped to 6.4 degrees (given in the table below).

February is the month when day temperature actually starts rising. In 100 years between 1901-2000, the average minimum temperature was 10.3 degrees while in the last 5 years it has been recorded at 8.8 degrees- again a drop of few notches (given in the table below).

Going by this data comparison, it can be said that in spite of a warmer start to the winter season in October this year, the following months may witness cooler nights.

Average day temperatures in Delhi for the last five years during October have been 32.7ºC, during November 27ºC, December 22.2ºC, January 18.7ºC and in February 21.9ºC (given in the table below).

While average day temperature in Delhi during the same months from 1901-2000 have been 32.9ºC, 28.3ºC, 23.0ºC, 21.1ºC and 24.2ºC degrees respectively (given in the table below). It shows that similar to nights, days have also been cooler in the last five years compared to 1901-2000.
