Winter to end Dengue menace in Delhi

November 1, 2013 4:21 PM |

With winter setting in, the Delhi government would be breathing a sigh of relief. The dengue menace that had gripped the city and claimed several lives may end with the fall in temperatures.

According to medical experts, the breeding rate of Aedes mosquitoes that carry the Dengue virus drops during the winter season, which is just the opposite of what happens during hot and humid weather conditions.

Humidity during monsoon provides ideal breeding conditions for the dengue mosquito. Moreover, during rains, fresh water stagnates in ditches and roads, helping them to breed. But in winters, the air is dry and there isn’t much rain for water to accumulate due to which we witness a drop in dengue cases.

According to a media report, there have been six deaths out of the total number of 4,354 cases reported in Delhi so far.

The highest numbers of cases (1,876) were reported from the north corporation while the south and east corporations reported 1,298 and 1,061 respectively.
