Winter storm Leon heads for southeast US

January 28, 2014 6:27 PM |

An Arctic air mass is moving towards the southeast region of United States of America and could cause snowfall in the region during the next 24 to 48 hours. The cold air mass is expected to collide with the moist southwesterly winds associated with a low pressure area emerged in the Gulf of Mexico.

Alabama, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina and Virginia are the cities that might witness snowfall on Tuesday and Wednesday. Schools and Universities have been closed as this is expected to be the severest of the winter storm in the last two and a half decades.

Schools in east Texas and Florida panhandle have been closed on Tuesday ahead of the winter storm Leon. Thousands of flights have been reported to be cancelled in the region. Delta spokeswoman Betsy Talton said on Monday night that 1,850 Delta flights alone have been canceled on Tuesday.

Power outages may hamper normal life in the areas where heavy snowfall is expected as power lines may snap due to its weight. Roads may also get blocked at some places. Last week, the northeastern parts of US from Boston to Virginia had witnessed similar weather due to another winter storm Janus that led to widespread obstruction to transport. Thousands of flights were grounded for two days from 22nd to 23rd January.
