Winter Rains Over Punjab And Haryana, Snow Over Hills

January 9, 2023 1:45 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Western disturbance is still moving across the northern mountains.  Jammu&Kashmir received light scattered rain in the foothills and mid reaches. Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Srinagar, Bhaderwah, Qazi Gund, Udhampur and Jammu witnessed cloudy sky and fleeting showers. Weather activity is continuing ushering cold day along with cold wave conditions, particularly across the mountainous terrain.

In quick succession, another western disturbance is likely to arrive around 10th evening. This disturbance will last longer, for about 4 days. Intensity and spread of rainfall will be wider than the existing one.  All the northern mountain states will experience rain and snow. Rainfall will extend and cover foothills and northern half of plains of Punjab and Haryana.

Western disturbance will induce a cyclonic circulation over North Punjab and North Rajasthan between 11th and 13th January. Reversal in the wind pattern from dry and cold north-westerlies to easterly winds will raise the night temperatures and abate the prolonged cold wave conditions.  Also, the associated clouding will spread across Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan and Delhi during this period.

Rain and showers will remain confined to the upper parts of Punjab and Haryana. Rajasthan and Delhi are likely to skip and at best will observe partly cloudy sky on these days.

Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ropar, Chandigarh, Mohali, Karnal, Ambala, Hissar, Kurukshetra and Panipat are likely to have scattered light to moderate showers between 11th and 13th Jan, and more so on 12th Jan 2023.  Light sprinkle is likely to be witnessed on festival 'Lohri' at few places.  A general clearance is expected from 14th Jan, Makar Sankranti onward across the region. Fog and cold wave may make a comeback around the weekend.
