Winter Rains Over Northern Plains, Cold Wave To Intensify Next Week

As on expected lines, plains of North India have been lashed with winter rains, since last night. Light to moderate showers were witnessed over parts of Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan and the foothills of Uttarakhand. The national capital also recorded moderate showers across different parts and the showers continued in the morning and forenoon hours. Overcast conditions will light to moderate rains will continue for the day and spill over on the weekend as well. Clearance can be expected, early on Sunday, Dec 29, 2024.

There is a cyclonic circulation over Delhi, South Haryana and Northeast Rajasthan. The feature is getting fueled with moist winds from the Arabian Sea across Gujrat and South Rajasthan. Courtesy cyclonic circulation, light and scattered unseasonal rains have occurred over North Gujarat and South Rajasthan. The capital city Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Baroda and Deesa received light rains. The hill station of Mount Abu and the former capital of Mewar Kingdom Udaipur also received a light sprinkle.

The cyclonic circulation will move eastward to parts of West Uttar Pradesh, North Madhya Pradesh and Delhi region. The rainfall belt will accordingly extend to cover more parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh tomorrow. The intensity and spread of rains will reduce over Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana during this period. The national capital will continue to have light rains tomorrow, as well. A broad clearance over the entire region is expected on Sunday.

Following clearance in the weather activity, the winds will revert back to seasonal northwesterly. These chilly winds blowing down the slopes of the mountains will lead to a significant drop in the temperatures across the plains of North India, including Delhi. Cold wave conditions are expected to come up yet again, right at the start of next week. Dry weather conditions can be expected for the New Year festivities, albeit with the typical winter flavour of freeze and cold snap, through the night.
