Rain spread increased further from the northern plains to reach farther posts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Though, the rains were mostly light and moderate at a few places only, but covered large parts of these two states. More rains are likely over the next 2 days, 21st and 22nd Feb. The winter rain deficit for these two states will shrink further and may inch towards normal in a few pockets of the states.
The western disturbance from the northern mountains is tracking eastward across the Himalayas. The induced cyclonic circulation of plains is shifting eastward. An east-west trough from Delhi and Southwest Uttar Pradesh is extending up to Bihar and Jharkhand. This trough is getting subsumed by another cyclonic circulation over Bihar and West Bengal in the lower levels. The anticyclone over the Northwest Bay of Bengal is pumping moist winds over the region. The combined influence of all three features will extend the wet spell for two more days.
In the past 24 hours, central and western Uttar Pradesh witnessed a decent spread of winter rains. The eastern half of the state and contiguous portion of Bihar had light rainfall. Showers lashed Lucknow, Kanpur, Orai, Hardoi, Hamirpur, Ayodhya, Azamgarh, Sultanpur and Ballia. Even, the far eastern posts of Varanasi and Gorakhpur also had very light rainfall. In Bihar, the spread was rather light and limited to a few stations like Patna, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Supaul and Purnea.
Meteorological conditions remain favourable for the continuation of winter rains, over these two states. The spread and intensity may increase, as well. In addition to the earlier stations of Uttar Pradesh, the rains may also travel to reach Prayagraj, Raebareli, Amethi, Pratapgarh, Ghazipur and Jaunpur. The state of Bihar also will see more rain, more along the foothills, than the plains. The showers are likely over Motihari, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Raxaul, Supaul, Champaran, Begusarai, Saraiya and Gaya. The capital cities Patna, Darbhanga, Purnea, Bhagalpurpur, Araria, Katihar and Kishanganj may experience light to moderate showers over the next two days. The weather conditions are expected to become better from 23rd Feb onward.
