The states of the North Indian Plains had been witnessing dry weather conditions for quite some time now. Moreover, the day temperatures across the region were settling close to or slightly above the normal levels while minimums in many parts of Punjab and Haryana were even settling below the 5-degree mark.
However, rain gods have bestowed some kindness on the residents of the plains of North India and the first spell of winter rains have lashed many parts of North India. In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Patiala recorded 18 mm of rains, Amritsar 13 mm, Meerut 9 mm, Hisar 8 mm, Delhi 8 mm, Najibabad 7 mm and Moradabad 2 mm.

These rains have been attributed to the induced cyclonic circulation persisting over Rajasthan and adjoining Haryana region. This system was formed under the influence of an active Western Disturbance present over the Western Himalayas which has already given good amounts of rain and snow over many parts of Jammu and Kashmir as well as Himachal Pradesh.

Due to these rains, day temperatures have witnessed a significant drop over many areas in Punjab. In fact, cold day conditions are prevailing in many areas. Cold day conditions occur when the maximum temperature drops below the 15-degree mark over the plains.
Currently, maximum temperature in Amritsar has been settling at 15.5 degrees, Firozpur 15.5 degrees, Pathankot 15.4 degrees and Ludhiana 15.6 degrees.
Now, some improvement in terms of rains is expected and rainfall activity will take a backseat over the plains. However, the possibility of some rains over the foothills cannot be ruled out.
