Winter chill missing from Delhi-NCR, pleasant weather on New Year's Eve

December 30, 2015 1:02 PM |

Winter WeatherIn the latest turn of events, weather in Delhi-NCR is likely to be pleasant at the end of this year. And if you are planning the Great Outdoor Party to ring in the New Year then worry not; foggy nights or bone chilling cold is far from spoiling your spirits.

Harsh winter conditions have still not set in Delhi-NCR and mild weather is expected to continue for the next week as well. Both maximum and minimum temperatures are settling 2-4 degrees above than the normal which is highly unlikely for weather in Delhi during December.

This mild winter spell has been caused due to the anti-cyclonic circulation forming over Rajasthan. This system is bringing in warmer and drier winds from the west. Even during first few days on January, similar weather along with shallow or moderate fog will persist and dense fog will be far from affecting flight and train traffic.

Delhi that normally witnesses 9.4 mm of rain during December has only witnessed trace so far. The winter rain that usually begins to affect weather in Delhi by second half of the month stayed away from the national capital region due to the absence of any strong Western Disturbances. The only Western Disturbances that appeared this year remained feeble in nature resulting in light snowfall over the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, sans any rain over plains of North India.

By comparison, minimum temperature today is 8.5°C which was 4.5°C on the same day last year. Cold wave conditions that severely affected parts of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi by this last year is also absent.
