Winter chill intensifies in Northwest, Central India, blame it on missing winters rains

January 6, 2018 11:08 AM |

Winters in DelhiMost parts of North and East India are reeling under the grip of cold wave. In fact, winter chill has intensified during the last 2-3 days. Blame it all to the winter rains, which have mainly remained absent from the plains this year.

Winter rains are governed by Western Disturbances and induced cyclonic circulations. For the winter rains, we need to get an active Western Disturbance that could induce a cyclonic circulation over the plains. If the system is strong enough, it could also give rains to the areas as low as North Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi-NCR.

So far in the year, there has been only one occasion of winter rains that was around December 11-12. Thereafter, the weather has absolutely gone dry across the plains. Although there has been passage of several Western Disturbances but as they are travelling in higher latitudes, their effect has restricted till Jammu and Kashmir only.

Post-December 11, no such system has approached Jammu and Kashmir. Not only for rains, these systems also obstruct the flow of icy cold winds that blow straight from the snow-clad Himalayas. But with no system for almost three weeks now, these chilly winds have been blowing uninterruptedly, leading to steep drop in mercury across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and even over few parts of Madhya Pradesh. Minimum temperatures are settling below 7˚C over most parts of aforementioned places.

Although these systems did not affect the plains in terms of rains but humidity levels did spike up. Thus, low temperatures combined with high humidity levels led to the formation of fog of varying intensity that restricted the rise in day temperatures.

In fact, several parts of East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are reeling under cold day conditions. These conditions are declared when day maximums are 16˚C or below.

We are afraid that we do not foresee any changes in the prevailing weather conditions for the next few days. Weathermen are not predicting any weather system approaching the region, at least for the next week or 10 days.
