Winter chill grips Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Patna, Gaya as mercury dips steeply

Winter has tightened its grip across Indo-Gangetic plains, as the maximum temperatures have dropped significantly, particularly over parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

In fact, many parts of both these states are reeling under the cold day conditions. Cold day conditions are declared when day maximums are recorded 16˚C or below. Let us have a look at the maximum temperatures recorded on Monday across both the states.

Although, places like Aligarh, Patna  and Supaul do not fall under the cold day conditions category as per the definition but day maximums across these mentioned places were recorded around 17˚C, which is just one degree more than defined criteria.

According to Skymet Weather, the region is quite favourable for these conditions during this time of the year. The cold day conditions occur on account of fog, rain and thick clouding. Chilly winds from northwest worsen the situation further.

As per weathermen, we have been seeing persistent fog all along the Indo-Gangetic plains, with Uttar Pradesh and Bihar being the preferred locations.

Unrelenting fog conditions are prevailing in Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Patna, Bahraich, Gaya for the last many days. Besides this, wind speed is ranging from light to very light, due to which fog does not lift for long duration even after the sunrise. In turn, this fog cover arrests the rise in maximum temperature, that would eventually lead to drop in night temperatures as well. According to weathermen, persistent fog has a cascading effect, which last for days together.

However, this might not be the case at present, as improvement is on cards after the next two days. Wind speed are most likely to pick up pace, which would reduce the intensity of fog significantly. As a result, maximum temperatures would start rising again. Till then no respite is likely from the chilly weather.
