New Year began on a foggy and wintery note for Delhi and NCR. In fact, Delhi witnessed the first densest fog of the season on January 1. Prior to this, Delhi was relishing fog-free mornings. In fact, the winter chill has been on its peak for the last 2 days, today is the coldest with the minimum temperatures at its lowest.
Delhi recorded the minimum at 5.7°C on January 1, which was the lowest then after which, the temperatures scaled up by 2-3 degrees, however, the night temperatures once again curtailed and stood at the season’s lowest today.
Delhi’s Safdarjung Observatory recorded the minimums settling at 5°C. Palam Observatory also recorded the night temperatures at 5.6°C, both being the lowest of the season so far.

As per Skymet Weather, the period from the last week of December until January 10 is the coldest period for northwest India. Usually, during this period, the minimums reach in low single digits. However, this time, during the month of December, the temperatures remained above normal except on January 1 and then today it reached 5°C.
According to Skymet Weather, the fog has been persisting overDelhiand NCR for almost the last 4-5 days. Moreover, the Western Disturbance has also moved away eastwards leading to the northerly flow of winds. These winds are blowing from the snow-clad mountains of North India due to which the minimum temperatures witnessed a sharp drop.
In the last 2 days, the temperatures of Gujarat and West Rajasthan also dropped significantly and now the effect of these northerly winds can be felt across Delhi and NCR.
Now, also not many changes are expected in the minimums and for the next 2-3 days, the temperatures will remain in the range of 4-6 degrees and winter chill will persist. However, the wind speed is expected to pick up the pace leading to marginal improvement in the fog conditions. Hence, the day temperatures may increase marginally due to the reduction in the fog intensity.
