Will ongoing East India rains be beneficial for Rabi Crops?

January 20, 2016 4:21 PM |

Rain in East IndiaMost parts of East and Northeast India have received light to moderate rains during last 24 hours. Many places in East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and the northeastern states have received rain at many places.

These rains will prove to be beneficial for the Rabi crops (wheat and mustard) in East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

But, this positive effect might stand redundant if temperatures start rising from February onward. At present, the weather models are showing signs of rise in the mercury level. We have to wait and watch further developments.

The intensity of rainfall over eastern parts was more than the northeast states so far. But now, weather of East Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand will clear up. Only scattered light rains will continue over eastern parts of Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, North Coastal Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal for another 24 hours.

The intensity of rain will now be more over the Northeastern states. Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, eastern Assam and parts of Meghalaya will receive some rainfall. Rainfall will reduce significantly over most parts of the East India by January 21. By next day, the weather will clear up in Northeast India as well.

A cyclonic circulation which was over East Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Uttar Pradesh had induced the rainfall activity. Moreover, moisture incursion was taking place in the form southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal. Thus, the confluence zone developed over the region.

After 24 hours, minimum temperatures will decrease by 2 to 3 degree Celsius over East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha. Fog is also expected to make a comeback due to the left over moisture.
