If you have been anticipating about a must visit to Mussoorie, Manali, Tawang or Coorg this May just to escape the scorching summer and inclement weather, then you may want to derail and choose Delhi, Ooty, Bengaluru and Bhopal as your preferred summer destinations. If weather gods are to be believed, the month of May is likely to be as cooler as April and March in North, Central, Eastern and southern parts of India.

The month, when travel enthusiasts throng various destinations and everyone else seeks excuses to escape the scorching sun, is likely to experience cooler climate compared to last few years.

Weather in May in Peninsular India

Pre-monsoon activity in South India remains low key in the month of March and picks up by the beginning of April. May receives the maximum amount of pre-monsoon showers and the trend is likely to be followed as thundershowers and pre-monsoon rain is expected to increase with greater intensity over Kerala and Karnataka. So places like Mysore, Bandipur, and even Tiruchi will have cooler climate compared to most parts of North India.

Weather in May in North, Central India

May marks the beginning of peak summer season in parts of Northern and Central India with day temperatures rising up to 40°C at several occasions. Heat wave condition is also common during this month in Rajasthan, Gujarat and parts of Maharashtra. But May 2015 is likely to register more rainy days in these parts of India as compared to last few years.

Rain is likely to be heavy and widespread in Northeast India with Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal receiving more rain than the normal.

Series of Western Disturbances

The reason due to which people will be able to drink the pleasant atmosphere is Western Disturbance. A series of Western Disturbance is expected to influence the weather in hills of India and plains of North India during the entire month. As per Skymet Meteorology Division in India, one western disturbance per week is likely.

While one weather system will be experienced on 30th April and its effect will spill over into May, another one will be observed from 9th – 12th May that will affect the hilly states of Jammu and Kashmir, H.P. and Uttarakhand.

Back to back Western Disturbances are likely to occur from 13th – 15th May and then 16th – 18th May. The last round of WD is likely to happen on 22nd May – 25th May.

According to Skymet, as soon as the cooler May comes to an end, Southwest Monsoon will quickly make an appearance by 27th May.
