Even if the Southwest Monsoon withdrew from West Rajasthan, Monsoon rains made a comeback before they retreated completely from India. The well-marked low pressure area lying over Saurashtra & Kutch, and adjoining areas has given fairly widespread rain in last two days over Rajasthan and as the system moves towards Rajasthan in next 24 hours, it will further give fairly widespread rainfall activity over entire Rajasthan during next two to three days.
In last 24 hours, parts of Rajasthan that have received rainfall includes Barmer 6 mm, Jaisalmer 48 mm, Sriganganagar 13 mm and Udaipur 4 mm. Due to the rains, rainfall excess in West Rajasthan has increased by 1% to 38%. Fairly widespread rain is likely in the area for next couple of days. Thereafter, eastern parts of the state will also receive light to moderate rainfall as the weather system moves closer to Rajasthan.
Updated on September 20, 2015: Widespread rainfall likely over Rajasthan during next few days
Since last few years, Rajasthan has been receiving excellent rains during Monsoon. This year was no different for the state as it received good rains in the months of June and July.
The month of July ended with a surplus of 117% rainfall for West Rajasthan and 37% for East Rajasthan. Although on and off rainfall continued over Rajasthan during August, the intensity of rain was mainly subdued. As a result, rainfall figures came down to 58% for West Rajasthan and 5% for East Rajasthan.
The month of September was almost dry for entire Rajasthan, barring one or two localized incidents. In the last 24 hours, scattered rainfall has been reported over parts of Rajasthan. Barmer recorded 37 mm of rain, Pilani 2.1 mm, and Sri Ganganagar 25 mm. Udaipur, Jodhpur, Mount Abu, and Churu also received very light rainfall.
Now, the well-marked low pressure area that is at present over Saurashtra, Kutch, and adjoining areas will move towards Rajasthan and will give fairly widespread rainfall activity over entire Rajasthan during next two to three days. Few areas in the region may get hefty rain as well. This well-marked low pressure area will gradually lose its intensity while giving good rainfall over the state. This may be the last weather system for Rajasthan during this Monsoon season.
As Monsoon has already withdrawn from western parts of the state, Skymet Meteorology Division in India expects that subsequent to the current system, winds will again change to westerly-northwesterly direction and humidity will go down significantly. This will give birth to conditions favorable for the further withdrawal of Monsoon from other parts of Rajasthan.
However, withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon is not likely to commence before September 23 or 24. The normal date for commencement of withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon is September 1. In fact, by September 15, Monsoon usually withdraws from most parts of Rajasthan. However, this year, the withdrawal of Monsoon is likely to be delayed by at least ten days.
