Widespread Pre Monsoon Showers Over Northern Plains, Another Round Next Week

May 18, 2023 1:11 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Under the influence of western disturbance moving across the mountains and induced cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan, widespread rain and thundershowers lashed most parts of Punjab, Haryana, North & East Rajasthan and Delhi. Moderate showers were recorded over many locations like Amritsar, Bhatinda, Ferozepur, Ludhiana, Patiala, Chandigarh, Mohali,  Ambala, Karnal, Hisar, Bhiwani, Kurukshetra, Rohtak and Delhi/NCR.  Some cities of Rajasthan like Ganganagar, Jaipur, Churu, Sikar and Bhilwara also registered light to moderate pre-monsoon activity.  Isolated stations recorded hailstorms over North Rajasthan. Mercury levels plunged by 4-5 degrees in most places.

Notwithstanding widespread weather activity, the temperatures will rise again today, albeit not as strongly as in the past 24hr.  Spread of weather activity will also shrink and intensity will reduce as well.  Temperature is likely to rise by 2-4 degrees tomorrow onward.  Southern parts of Punjab and Haryana, bordering Rajasthan and the national capital Delhi will witness temperature climbing to 42-43 degrees in the next 3-4 days.

There is likely respite coming up again from the sweltering heat next week. Fresh western disturbance and its induced circulation will act in tandem to bring a twist in weather conditions over the northern plains. Prolonged spell of rain and thundershowers with hailstorms at a few places are likely between the 22nd and 28th of May.

Weather activity will be light and scattered on the 22nd and 23rd of May. Spread and intensity will increase from the 24th.  Mercury will take a significant dip during this period over most parts. Cloudy sky, moderate breeze and intermittent rain will take away the heat. Pleasant weather conditions are likely both during the day and night over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, North &East Rajasthan, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh and North Madhya Pradesh.
