Western Disturbance has given widespread heavy snowfall across the hilly states of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, while Uttarakhand received moderate snowfall. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the system is presently prevailing over Jammu and Kashmir state and is moving eastwards.
The system, which is active in nature, has covered most parts of these states, including those areas where it has not snowed so far this season. In Jammu and Kashmir, Pahalgam and Gulmarg witnessed snow, while places such as Leh and Thoise, which do not observe snow so often were also seen covered in white blanket.
In Himachal Pradesh, Manali, Shimla, Chamba, Kullu, Kufri, Keylong and Kalpa were seen engulfed with snow.
According to forecast by Skymet, the three hilly states will continue to witness snowfall during the next 48 hours. However, the rainfall will reduce in intensity over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, while Uttarakhand will be witnessing an increase in intensity.
In the wake of the system, hilly states are observing both cold day and cold wave conditions, making the weather freezing cold with extremely chilly winds.
Fresh snowfall has brought cheer to the tourists, who were planning to spend the upcoming long weekend at the hill stations.
Western Disturbances become frequent during winters and are responsible for affecting the weather in the region to a large extent. These systems after approaching the region usually stay for 1-2 days and give short spells of rain. The system is called Western Disturbance due to its movement from west to east.
