February 20, 2015 1:20 PM |

Srinagar snowfallThe Western Disturbance in Jammu and Kashmir has led to widespread precipitation in the region for the second consecutive day. In the last 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Thursday Batote in Jammu and Kashmir has received 60 mm of rain, while the 48 hour rainfall figure is 93 mm.

Similarly the two-day rainfall figure for Banihal is 84 mm, while the 24 hour rainfall is 62 mm. The state capital Srinagar has also observed 25 mm of rain in last 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Thursday.

Adjoining state of Himachal Pradesh has also received good amounts of precipitation. For instance Kullu has received 67.3 mm of rain in last 24 hours, which is the second highest in a decade. The highest 24 hour rainfall is 84 mm, recorded on February 20, 2007, which also happens to be the all-time record. The effect of the system was mild in Uttarakhand with Mukteshwar recording 1.4 mm of rain. Uttarkashi and Tehri also observed 2 mm of rain.

Temperatures Drop

The precipitation has helped in pulling down the above normal day temperature in the region by a good margin. Srinagar recorded 4.4°C as the maximum on Thursday, which is 5 degrees below the normal average for the month. In Pahalgam also the maximum settled 5 degrees below normal to record 1°C. Banihal saw the day temperature settle 7 degrees below normal at 4°C.

In Himachal too, the day temperatures settled way below the normal. For instance Kullu recorded 8.5°C as the maximum on Thursday which is a whopping 9 degrees below the monthly average. In Manali the maximum settled at 4°C, which is 8 degrees below the normal. Before the Western Disturbance affected the region the day temperatures were on a rising spree as they were settling 6-7 degrees above the normal average.

This spell of rain is expected to continue for another 24 hours after which there will be a respite for almost two days before another Western Disturbance affects the region on February 23.
