Wide variation in Monsoon rains over East India

August 2, 2015 3:12 PM |

Rain in East IndiaIn the month of July, Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand received good Monsoon showers. These are the only two states, which have improved in terms of rainfall deficit in East India.

Sub-Himlayan West Bengal, Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh received only subdued rainfall in July. As a result, the rainfall deficiencies in these regions have increased further.

The following table will substantiate this statement.

In the table below we can see that East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar remained rain deficit both at the end of June and July. Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal went from deficient to surplus.

Rain in East India

All the weather systems which originated over North Bay of Bengal throughout July, moved in a west/northwest direction. These systems brought good showers only over Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand.

Even the cyclonic storm Komen moved in a westerly direction after bringing heavy to very heavy rains in Gangetic West Bengal. After making landfall in Bangladesh on last Friday, Komen brought heavy showers in Kolkata. In a span on 24 hours from 8.30 am on Friday, Kolakta recorded 133.6 mm of rain.

Slight improvement in the flood situation is likely in West Bengal, as the intensity of rain will now reduce. But, the well-marked low pressure area, lying over Jharkhand, will bring rains over Odisha and Jharkhand.

In the coming days as well, East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar will continue to receive only subdued rainfall. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal will also receive only light rain during next 2 days. The intensity of rain could increase thereafter.
