When is Monsoon 2019 going to arrive in Punjab and Haryana?

The monsoon usually enters the state of Punjab and Haryana around the same time as of Delhi. However, there could be a difference of 4-5 days depending on the strength of the Monsoon current, particularly with the state of Punjab.

Going by the Historical data, the actual onset date of Southwest Monsoon in Punjab and Haryana is July 1 but the scenario does not look very conducive at the moment. According to meteorologists at Skymet, Monsoon in Punjab is likely to get delayed with the new expected onset around July 9. While, Haryana is going to observe the entry of Monsoon around July 5, a delay of almost a week.

Monsoon rains in Punjab and Haryana are not largely governed by the Southwest Monsoon. Rather, Western Disturbances that affect the Western Himalayas and its induced cyclonic circulations assist the Monsoon current in giving good rains in the region.

However, the Monsoon period in Punjab and Haryana is not extensive. In fact, July and August are the only active Monsoon months for both the states. This is because of the late arrival and early withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon.

Meanwhile, the progress of Southwest Monsoon has already been slow across the country and the current situation does not look any better. Here is a table explaining why the Southwest Monsoon has been making delayed onset over most parts of the country.

On the other hand, Punjab and Haryana are already staring at a huge rainfall deficiency in June. According to the data available with Skymet, Rainfall in Haryana so far is deficient by 52%, while the shortfall in Punjab is 35%. And with hardly any rain in sight for a week the deficiency is likely to climb further.
