After having a deluge in July 2024, the rainiest city Mumbai has literally gone into a shell. In the last one week, the city has accumulated less than 5mm of rainfall. Even, a week prior to that, the city recorded patchy rainfall.  Mumbai, known for drowning showers in August has recorded just 23mm rainfall in the last 2 weeks.

Rains are likely to come up around the upcoming weekend and the city may witness typical Mumbai rains, one of those days, between 24th and 26th August 2024. The weather activity will be associated with the approach of monsoon low pressure, currently positioned, over South Bangladesh and Gangetic West Bengal.

Before the approach of the system from the Bay of Bengal, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep region in the next 24 hours. This will initially move northwest, away from the coast for about 24 hours and may reach west abeam Coastal Karnataka on 22nd August 2024. The system may even become a depression for a short while, while it gets positioned west of Goa and South Konkan, in the Arabian Sea, The system will keep a safe distance from Mumbai and therefore, may not give any heavy weather, as such. The sea conditions and the monsoonal shear will weaken the system, over the sea itself. Konkan Coast, including Mumbai, may have mostly light rainfall.

Subsequently, the low pressure from the Bay of Bengal will reach Madhya Pradesh and the neighbourhood on 24th August. Moving westward, the system will pass over Southwest Madhya Pradesh, Southeast Rajasthan, North Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat over the next 2-3 days. This will strengthen the surge along the Konkan Coast. Under its influence, the intensity and spread of rainfall will increase between the 24th and 26th of August 2024. The weather conditions will start easing out as the low pressure moves deep inside Saurashtra & Kutch and the Northeast Arabian Sea on 27th August.
