The Western Himalayas, spanning Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Ladakh, have remained largely dry for nearly a week. No new Western Disturbance (WD) has approached the region, and calm, cold weather continues to prevail even over adjoining north Pakistan.

The season’s first significant snowfall occurred around October 2, followed by a strong Western Disturbance between October 6 and 8, which brought moderate to heavy snowfall across the higher reaches of the Himalayas. Nearly 85 percent of upper-altitude terrain was covered in snow at the time—an early signal of winter’s arrival.

Another weak system between October 20 and 22 delivered light rain and snow over parts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. The last noticeable WD, which passed around November 4, only brushed the upper reaches of these states, leaving most of the mountains and valleys dry.

Current Situation and Outlook

According to Skymet Weather, no fresh Western Disturbance is likely to reach the Himalayas for at least 8–10 days. This extended lull means the hills will continue under clear skies, cold mornings, and dry air.

The lack of cloud cover and the persistent flow of northwesterly winds from snow-laden peaks are pulling down temperatures across North and Central India, deepening the ongoing winter chill.

Without a fresh system, the wait for new snowfall in popular tourist spots such as Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Manali, and Kufri grows longer. Locals and visitors alike are hoping the next disturbance will soon bring back the snow and revive the winter tourism season.

Until then, the Western Himalayas remain under the dominance of dry, cold northwesterlies, offering crisp blue skies and chilly mornings—a calm pause before the next snowy chapter begins.
