A fairly good Western Disturbance is expected to arrive on 21st night and affect parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi/NCR. In view of this system, plains of North India will receive the first winter rain.
In this season, so far very few Western Disturbances have affected India and the ones that have crossed India have not been strong enough to leave any significant impact over the plains, including Delhi. The present system is expected to induce snowfall over the higher reaches and rain in the lower hills of northern India. Light rain is also expected in pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and adjoining areas. After the passage of the system temperatures will drop, setting the condition for the commencement of extremely cold winters.
At present, minimum temperatures are definitely on the higher side, about 3 to 4 degrees above normal. However, this fresh Western Disturbance will bring down the minimums below normal. Fog in North India which has been disrupting day to day life since 16th of December, will clear out with this system. The situation will improve in places which have been experiencing dense fog including Delhi, Amritsar, Lucknow, Allahabad, Patna and Agra. But this respite will last only for 48 hours.
In South India, Bangalore experienced the first fog of the season today morning. Runway visibility range (RVR) reduced to 50 meters and was 100 meters around 8.30 a.m. at the Bengaluru International Airport.
