September 22, 2015 12:03 PM |

Rain in Jammu and KashmirSince the commencement of the withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon, no active Western Disturbance (WD) has affected the hills in North India. For instance, Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir remained completely dry from September 5 to September 21 this month.

Although no active WD visited the region in September, we kept seeing weather activity in this part of the country. However, since last two days, an active WD has been hovering above the region. In the last 24 hours, good widespread rains have been observed in Jammu and Kashmir and scattered rainfall activity has been witnessed in parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

In the last 24 hours, in Jammu and Kashmir, Gulmarg received 26 mm of rain, Pahalgam 19 mm, Qazigund 26 mm, Srinagar 18 mm, Anantnag 27 mm, and Baramulla 12 mm.

Over the last 24 hours, light rain was observed in Himachal Pradesh as well, with Kasuali recording 12 mm, Dalhousie 7 mm, and Dharamsala 6.4 mm rainfall. In Uttarakhand, Pantnagar received 3 mm of rain while Haridwar recorded 18 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours.

The conditions in this part of the country will continue to remain pleasant as the WD is expected to give good rainfall activity over Jammu and Kashmir for another 24 hours. While good rains are likely to remain confined to Jammu and Kashmir, scattered light rain is also expected over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Rains in these parts of the country during this time of the year do not change the temperature profile much. However, with cloud cover persisting during daytime and short spells of rain hitting the region, a marginal drop is experienced in day temperatures.
