An active Western Disturbance (WD) currently resides over Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas. It is gradually moving northeastward and has given fairly widespread rainfall over North Pakistan, PoK, and Jammu and Kashmir.
In Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu recorded 32.8 mm of rain, Pahalgam 24 mm, Bhaderwah 14 mm, Katra 6 mm, and Srinagar 0.5 mm. In fact, nearly all the districts in Jammu and Kashmir have received rainfall of varying intensity.
But now, as the WD is moving away from the region, scattered rain is expected over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand during next 24 hours. Thereafter, weather in the region will become dry and sunny.
Each year during Monsoon, most parts of India including the plains in the north receive rainfall due to the Southwest Monsoon. But the western Himalayan region such as Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh receive rain due to approaching WDs. Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi get rains due to the oscillation of the Monsoon trough as well as due to the effect of WDs.
But whenever a Western Disturbance and the Monsoon trough are active together, fairly widespread rainfall is observed over the northern plains including hilly regions. This keeps the region active in terms of weather and recurring showers make way for pleasant conditions with temperatures settling at par with or below normal.
