It is that time of the year again when frequency of the passage of Western Disturbances over Western Himalayas starts increasing. These systems are primarily responsible for bringing rain and snow over the hilly region of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
According to the meteorologists at Skymet Weather, Western Disturbances start affecting the region in the month of October and continue till end of February and sometimes up to March.
However, October is not so favourable month for snowfall over Jammu and Kashmir as the intensity of Western Disturbance is not strong during this time of the year.
But one cannot rule out the chances of some intense weather systems that are capable of giving some good snowfall. For instance, Srinagar and adjoining districts of North Jammu and Kashmir recorded heavy snowfall, last year from October 17 to 19.
Rain is common across the lower regions of Jammu and Kashmir such as Srinagar, Qazigund, Banihal, etc, while higher reaches of the state starts recording on and off snowfall.
This year, weather has been dry in October so far as no active Western Disturbance has affected Western Himalayas.
However, a feeble Western Disturbance is now affecting Jammu and Kashmir but it is not capable of giving any good weather activity over the state. We can expect some isolated spells of rains during the next 24 hours.
In wake of this, minimum temperatures have risen over most parts of the state and are now settling above normal by 1-3 degrees.
Thereafter the system is likely to clear away the region soon. Moreover, we do not foresee any Western Disturbance to approach the region during the next 4-5 days and thus dry weather conditions will prevail over the state.
