September 9, 2015 1:25 PM |

Rain in KeralaThe West Coast generally receives very heavy rainfall during the Monsoon season. This coast comprises of the subdivisions of Konkan & Goa, Coastal Karnataka and Kerala. The normal average rainfall figures of these places are very high.

However, this region has been lying inactive for a long period. Consequently, the rainfall deficiency in Konkan & Goa has mounted up to 35%, 29% in Kerala and 28% in Coastal Karnataka.

The Monsoon surge gained strength over the region on September 7, after witnessing about two weeks of dry spell. For the last 2 days, Coastal Karnataka has received four times the normal average rainfall each day. Kerala performed even better and received around five times the average rainfall.

Konkan & Goa region is still lying inactive. The entire West Coast receiving good Monsoon rains simultaneously is a very rare event. At present Southwest Monsoon is active over Coastal Karnataka and Kerala. The situation seems to be improving in Konkan & Goa now. During the next 2 days, rainfall will reduce in Kerala, continue in Coastal Karnataka and pick up in Konkan & Goa. Some rains are likely in Mumbai as well.

In fact, isolated Monsoon showers will continue to be observed along the West Coast for about next 10 days. Marginal drop is expected in the rainfall deficiency figures of the three subdivisions.
