During the Southwest Monsoon season, West Coast and Northeast India are the wettest pockets. In fact, these two regions are the major contributors of the Southwest Monsoon rainfall figures. Also, quite a few stations in the West Coast have four-digit monthly rainfall in a month.
Heavy rains have been lashing the West Coast for quite some time now. During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday good rainfall has been recorded over Konkan and Goa as well as Coastal Karnataka.
Take a look at the rainfall figures over entire West Coast in a span of 24 hours.
During the Southwest Monsoon, West Coast receives rain because of two factors, one of them being the off shore which remains activated along the West Coast almost throughout the season. Secondly, the region also witnesses rains due to Monsoon systems that come up in either the Bay of Bengal or the Arabian Sea.
Presently, the off shore trough is active all along the Western Ghats. However, very heavy rains have not occurred all along the trough line and rainfall has been received in patches. During the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall is expected to occur over Coastal Karnataka and Goa. Other parts of the West Coast will also receive good showers.
