West Bengal, one of the rainiest pockets in East India so far, is slated to receive good Monsoon showers in September. The moisture level from Bay of Bengal is expected to remain favourable for the state and likely to continue giving heavy rain over Sub- Himalayan West Bengal and scattered good rains over Gangetic West Bengal.
Due to several Monsoon systems originating in Bay of Bengal, West Bengal witnessed good Southwest Monsoon as heavy or moderate rain continued throughout July-August period. The rainfall surplus at the end of July stood at 48% for West Bengal. Cyclone Komen was the main reason contributing to this rainfall excess.
This large surplus however observed a dip as August approached but West Bengal managed to retain excess rainfall at the end of August as well. The state is currently standing at an excess rainfall of 25%.
As September moves ahead, the state is likely to receive on and off Monsoon showers for next one or two week. According to Skymet, a fresh Monsoon system is brewing in the Bay of Bengal that will begin giving rain over the coastal areas of West Bengal and later moving onto other parts of the state.
Due to an existing Monsoon trough across West Bengal, several places of the state received scattered heavy rain in last 24 hours. Isolated heavy showers will continue for next 24 hours due to this system.
