West Bengal receives excess rains in April so far, showers to continueThe state of West Bengal observes Pre-Monsoon rans since the month of March only unlike North India. Also, the Tropic of Cancer passes through the state which is why the region is known for violent thunderstorm activities, lightning, gale speed winds. As April begins, these activities pace up even more.

Weather activity approaches West Bengal through different directions, i.e. either from Odisha or from the Chhotanagpur region which is Jharkhand. Both of these systems are equally severe but the one approaching from Jharkhand is a shade severe. Due to the proximity of sea, these systems keep getting moisture and do not die easily.

March this time was on the lower side as far as rains are concerned. This time, heat was the dominant factor and rains were largely deficient this time. It was only one week, when rains were witnessed over the region.

The first few days of April also saw lesser rains but starting April 4, good rains were witnessed over the entire state. In the past week, West Bengal saw rains five times more than usual. In fact, the state recorded 25.5 mm against its average of 5.5 mm due to which the prevailing deficiency washed out. Between March 1 and April 12, 40.8 mm rainfall was recorded against 38.5 mm resulting in an excess of 6 percent.

The lower half of Gangetic West Bengal recorded excess rains wherein Kolkata received 85 mm against monthly average of 59 mm in April. Similarly, Shanti Niketan saw 63 mm of rains against 52 mm, Baharampur saw 53 mm against 60 mm and Bankura saw 120 mm against 35 mm.

The last 24 hours were also rainy enough for the state on account of the trough extending across West Bengal along with a cyclonic circulation over Bihar region. Along with this, an anti-cyclone also persisted in the Bay of Bengal.

Rains are expected to occur during the next 24 hours also, thereafter weather will clear up over the region.
