The onset of Monsoon over parts of East India was late than its usual date. In the initial phase of Monsoon, the 3 subdivisions of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar recorded less than average rainfall. By the end of June also no improvement was observed in rainfall amounts in these pockets, which remained deficient.
For instance, rainfall in Bihar was deficient by a good 28 per cent, while Jharkhand and West Bengal saw a shortfall of 7 and 4 per cent, respectively.
However, for the past 4 days this pocket has been receiving good amounts of rain. The daily surplus for most places in the region has been 100 per cent and more. Also, many places in these states have recorded 3 digit rainfall in a span of 24 hours.
In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Kolkata in West Bengal recorded 157 mm of rain, Ranchi in Jharkhand received 106 mm of rain, and Bankura observed 66 mm of rain. Also, on July 6, Patna and Gaya in Bihar recorded 86 mm and 66 mm of rain, respectively.
This spell has increased the rainfall figures in East India. As on July 9, the rainfall deficiency in Bihar has reduced to 14 per cent. On the other hand, West Bengal and Jharkhand have recorded rainfall surplus of 2 per cent and 5 per cent, respectively.
A well-marked low pressure area is over Bihar and Chhattisgarh, which is expected to give more rain over the aforementioned areas during the next 2 days. The likely spell of rain in Bihar may improve the rainfall figures in the state.
Prolonged spell of rain in a region like Bihar (close to Nepal foothills) results in the overflowing of rivers and creates flood like situation. People living in such areas must exercise caution.
